Just As You Are, Pa rum pum pum pum

“Everyone shall give as he is able, in accordance with the blessing of the Lord your God which He has given you.”

~ Deuteronomy 16:17

It was first known as the Carol of the Drum but quickly became a famous and beloved Christmas classic, The Little Drummer Boy. The song has delighted listeners year after year since 1951 and is one of the holiday season’s long-standing Christmas carols. The song tells about a poor young boy who gets a call to see the newborn King, a baby named Jesus, ’tis Christ the Lord. However, the boy feels inadequate approaching the baby Jesus because he has no gift to give the King. The only thing that comes to the boy’s mind is to play a tune on his drum for the King of kings and Lord of lords. When he played with all his heart, the boy saw baby Jesus smile at him with approval.

In that song, the overarching message is the same simple message we see in the gospel of Jesus Christ: “Come as you are.” Many people hesitate to approach God in prayer and accept Jesus as Savior and Lord because, like the little drummer boy, they feel inadequate in themselves or what they have to offer the Lord. God’s interest is not in what you offer Him in quantity, expensiveness, etc. Instead, God is interested in your sincere willingness to give joyfully from what you have been given. That is what we see in the little drummer boy, a gift from the heart using the talent of music given to him by God. That aligns perfectly with the Bible, which states: “Everyone shall give as he is able, by the blessing of the Lord your God which He has given you.” (Deu. 16:17)

Therefore, let us each recenter our focus on using the talents and resources given to us by God to go out and share the gospel telling people that Jesus loves them no matter how rich or poor, how skilled or unskilled a person may be. God loves each of us the same, and when we stand at the foot of the cross, no one is greater than the other. The Bible teaches that we have all sinned and fallen short of God’s glory and that while we were yet sinners, God so loved us that He sent His only begotten Son, Jesus, into the world to save us all from the penalty of our sin. Jesus is the reason for the Christmas season, and He wants a personal relationship with you, just as you are!

  1. Thank you kind sir for sharing this article! Giving to others as God has given unto us is important. Jesus Christ was a servant to mankind and freely gave of Himself to others. Likewise, followers of Jesus Christ should have the same qualities…be a servant unto others and be a blessing to them as God has blessed us.

Please, keep spreading the word! Many blessings to you!

    1. Amen! Jesus showed us the way, the path to walk, a journey of service to others, to those in need just as He exemplified for us during His earthly ministry. Thank you for sharing this added commentary and may the Lord continue to use you in ways to further His kingdom by sharing the gospel and serving others. Merry Christmas and God bless!
