Daily Bible Verse

“This cup, which is poured out for you, is the new covenant in My blood.”

Luke 22:20

When we meditate on the events that took place on Maunday Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter Sunday some 2000-thousand years ago, we realize what an emotional rollercoaster the disciples went through. The week began with such a warm and festive greeting by the people of Jerusalem, and they enjoyed and wonderful Passover meal with Jesus that Thursday. But their world quickly came crashing down around them when Jesus was taken into custody by the Sanhedrin that night after the Passover meal, then turned over to the Romans early the next morning, and crucified by 3:00 Friday afternoon.

While this all came as a sudden shock to His disciples, Jesus knew full well that His time had come, the culmination of His mission here on earth, to serve as the perfect sacrifice to atone for the sins of the world, to establish the new covenant between God and man through His shed blood. The Lord’s Supper, also known as communion, is in remembrance of Jesus, especially His sacrificial death. The outpouring of the cup symbolizes the outpouring of Jesus’ blood, which was necessary to forgive sin, which is in keeping with Scripture that states that there can be no remission of sin without the shedding of blood.

The good news is the story does not end there because, on the third day, Jesus rose from the grave; he conquered death so that we, too, those who have chosen to follow Jesus, will one day rise as well to be with Him in heaven forever. Therefore, on Maunday Thursday, today, be encouraged to meditate on the events that took place during Holy Week those many centuries ago.

“God never leaves you nor forsakes you.” I’ve heard that before.  “Jesus will leave the 99 to come after you.” I’ve heard that one too.  Meanwhile, fear creeps up when life hurls a season of loneliness our way, and poof! Churchy sayings hold as much weight as thin air.  Believe it or not, God is cheering us on and inviting us to thrive amidst the loneliness. Yes, it’s weird and scary, but this emptiness is a safe space where you get to hear the God of everything speak the loudest. You’re safe because God is so good at owning goodness amidst our dank, confused, lonely seasons, and because of Him, you aren’t so by yourself.”
