Daily Bible Verse

It is finished.

John 19:30

To the witnesses at the foot of the cross, these words spoken by Jesus must have sounded more like He was ready to give up. The deep penetrating wounds inflicted on Him by the Roman scourging made it difficult to breathe as He hung on the cross. People undergoing crucifixion would struggle to push or slide their weight upward to breathe. However, as they grew weaker by the moment due to exhaustion and significant blood loss, they would no longer be able to shift their weight upward, ultimately leaving them to suffocate. That is why the Roman guards would often break their legs to hasten death.

However, in Jesus’ case, His words were not meant to submit to His physical condition, but His words confirm His spiritual victory. He was declaring the accomplishment of the work that His Father sent Him into the world to do– the redemption of mankind. It truly shows the love Jesus has for people, a love so pure that He willingly laid down His life so that people could once again commune directly with God through a personal one-on-one relationship. Knowing that He had done what He came to do, Jesus chose to give up His spirit and place it in the hands of His Father.

Therefore, in the day ahead, be encouraged to ponder in the privacy of your thoughts the journey Jesus took this day so long ago to Calvary’s cross. Meditate on the love motivation He has for His Father, for you, for me, and everyone that fueled His passion for enduring the horrors of the cross so that those who believe would not perish but have eternal life.

Blessings.

“God never leaves you nor forsakes you.” I’ve heard that before.  “Jesus will leave the 99 to come after you.” I’ve heard that one too.  Meanwhile, fear creeps up when life hurls a season of loneliness our way, and poof! Churchy sayings hold as much weight as thin air.  Believe it or not, God is cheering us on and inviting us to thrive amidst the loneliness. Yes, it’s weird and scary, but this emptiness is a safe space where you get to hear the God of everything speak the loudest. You’re safe because God is so good at owning goodness amidst our dank, confused, lonely seasons, and because of Him, you aren’t so by yourself.”
