“If possible, so far as it depends on you, be at peace with all people.”Romans 12:18
It’s easy for us to love those who love us, but oh, how hard it is to love those that despise us. That’s because our sinful nature makes our automatic response want to return love for love and hate for hate, but Jesus, in one of the two greatest commandments, tells us to “love our neighbor as ourselves.”
Apostle Paul expounds on that when he recognizes that there are people in the world who love to hate, which is why he said, “If possible.” However, he also adds, “so far as it depends on you” because when we cling to hate in return for hate, we imprison ourselves while the person who hates us could care less and goes about to have a worry-free day. However, when we make a concerted effort to be at peace with those who hate us, we free ourselves to love them despite their hate and live and become more like Jesus Christ.
Therefore, as we enter into a new work week, let us set out to love those who hate us, in as much as it depends on us so that we can remain free in mind, body, and spirit to serve the Lord faithfully.
