“The kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking fine pearls, and upon finding one pearl of great value, he went and sold everything that he had and bought it.”Matthew 13:45-46
Have you ever wanted something so bad that you were willing to sacrifice other possessions to sell or trade to obtain it? What about selling all of your possessions to buy that one thing you want so much? Some people can reach such heights of desire that they’ll do anything to obtain that one item. It is the type of passion that Christ-followers ought to have in that they would do anything to serve the Lord. The passion that led Jesus to the cross at Calvary.
The costly pearl speaks to the redeeming work of Jesus on the cross where God sees every soul, every person, as a pearl of great price, souls whom He so loves. So much so that Jesus, who was both fully God and man, surrendered Himself on the cross. He sacrificed Himself to purchase our salvation, our redemption. He did so with His very life; he paid it all, as the old hymn goes, so that we, in turn, would choose to seek first the kingdom of God, to surrender our all in return, out of our love and desire to know and be with God forever. Yes, we, my friends, you and I, are pearls of great price to God.
Therefore, let us contemplate in the day ahead what we might yet need to surrender or sacrifice to further grow in our spiritual walk and draw closer to the Lord.
