“Who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?”
In any given year, there are roughly 261 workdays, which comes to 2,088 hours of work for a standard 40-hour workweek. That is a lot of time, and most people will spend one-third of their lives on the job. What makes that interesting is the majority of Americans are not satisfied with their job, according to a 2019 Gallop poll. Naturally, there are many reasons why people are not happy in their job, e.g., they do not get along with the boss, they were passed over for promotion, they do not feel valued, and the list goes on. However, if that person is you, did you ever consider that God has you there for a purpose?
In the Old Testament, Scripture records the life experience of a young woman, Hadassah, who was raised by her uncle, Mordecai. Hadassah won a beauty contest where the prize was to be named queen of Persia. As the queen, she received a Persian name, Esther. An evil man named Haman devised a plan to exterminate all the Jews in the land, and he tricked the King into signing the decree. When Mordecai learned about Haman’s plan, he approached Esther, but she was hesitant to approach the King because to do so without being summoned could result in that person’s death. That’s when Mordecai said to her, could it be you were put in this position for such a crisis? In other words, Esther, could it be that God ordained you queen for a higher calling, a higher purpose, His purpose?
As the pages of Scripture reveal, the answer to that question was yes. God indeed used Ester to foil Haman’s plan, who hung on the very gallows he had built to hang Mordecai. Therefore, if you are not satisfied where you work, the best thing you can do is pray. But consider this, could it be that God has placed you there for a higher calling, a higher purpose, His purpose? Perhaps you are the only Bible that one person at work will ever read, the only Christian example to ignite a curiosity in that person to want to know what is different about you, a desire to know Jesus. Perhaps you are where you are for a time such as this.
