“Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, watching over them—not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve.”
1 Peter 5:2/NIV
When Jesus walked the earth, He demonstrated kindness to those He encountered. He told the disciples: “Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all” (Mark 9:35). Jesus told His disciples that He was a servant (Matthew 12:18) for mankind, and the disciples should be the same. Jesus demonstrated kindness to them but was role modeling the types of behaviors and actions the disciples should emulate. That is also essential guidance for us two thousand years later!
Reading in John 21, Jesus is talking to Peter not long before He ascends into heaven. This conversation happens after Peter denies knowing Jesus in three instances. On those occasions, Peter was at risk of suffering much scrutiny and perhaps punishment if he acknowledged knowing Jesus Christ. Peter demonstrates remorse and regrets denying Jesus before others, and the passages appear to reflect Jesus forgave him. As Jesus repeatedly showed care and compassion for others, He wanted to make sure Peter got that message and told him if he loved Him, he should take care of His lambs and sheep (John 21:15-19).
As Jesus demonstrated care and compassion for His lambs and sheep, so should we! That was so important a concept that this was one of the last statements Jesus made to Peter before ascending into heaven. What a profound take-home message for us! Peter tells us that we should use our gifts to serve and help humanity which is a way of extending God’s grace to others: “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms” (1 Peter 4:10/NIV).
Self-reflection consideration: Am I using the gifts God has given me to be a servant while shepherding and taking care of God’s flock?
Many blessings to you!
