“After the death of Moses the servant of the Lord, the Lord said to Joshua son of Nun, Moses’ aide: “Moses my servant is dead. Now then, you and all these people, get ready to cross the Jordan River into the land I am about to give to them—to the Israelites. I will give you every place where you set your foot, as I promised Moses.”Joshua 1:1-3/NIV
In the Holy Bible, God promised Moses and his forefathers that He would give the land “flowing with milk and honey” to His chosen people, which was the Hebrew nation. In the book of Joshua, we see where God instructed Joshua, the earthly leader of the Hebrew nation, to lead His people into the “Promised Land.” When God gave this command to Joshua, the Hebrew nation had grown to over three million people. To get into the Promised Land, they would need to cross the Jordan River at a time of the year when it was deeper than usual and much wider to cross. Joshua did not have a bridge or boats to carry this massive nation across to the other side. How could this happen?
With mankind, limitations are very apparent. But, with God, the impossible will occur! In Matthew (19:26/NIV), we see where Jesus Christ was teaching those before Him at which time: “Jesus looked at them and said, ‘With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.’” God promised the early Hebrew nation leaders that He would give His chosen people the land He had purposed them. God will not go back on His promises or fail His people! But still, I wonder, how will over three million people get to the other side of the Jordan River? Matthew 19:26 is a clue!
As you read through Joshua 3 and 4, you see how God turned the impossible into reality. God instructed Joshua with great detail what to do to prepare for the Jordan River crossing, and he did what God commanded. As the Hebrew nation had no way of crossing the Jordan River, they had to rely on faith that God would lead them to the other side. Joshua and God’s chosen people had to have faith – and they did. Joshua followed God’s instructions which led to the parting of the Jordan River, and the nation successfully crossed over to the other side! In the 21st century, what symbolic Jordan Rivers do we have to cross, and how do we need to rely upon obedience and faith in God?
The concept of the Jordan River crossing could be an illustrative example of just about any challenge we are faced with today. Many times, I talk to people who feel they are going in the right direction for them, but they lack the confidence they will be successful. Sometimes in life, as we are following God’s plan and will for us and doing the work he has placed for us to do, these may not be easy tasks. Daunting, to say the least! Regarding our “Jordan River” crossings, when we don’t know how it will work out, where else can we turn? Trust in God and remember, “with man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” Amen!
Many blessings to you!
