I routinely mix with humanity in many different settings: family, friendships, home, work, church, volunteer endeavors, businesses, and community enrichment activities. The closer my relationship is with someone, the easier it becomes to know how they are doing. Many people carry their emotions on their sleeve, and it is easier to see the pain they carry. However, some people have poker faces and can hide their emotions very well, and they are hard to read. Sometimes it may be hard to know what to say to others when they present with a need!
The focal verse encourages me to be wise in how I act toward others, and I should make the most of every opportunity. I’ve had many experiences where I met strangers who had a need of some sort, and I believe God led them into my path to help them, knowing that I would never see them again. Routinely, I am in the company of people I know very well and the pain they carry, and I seek to be wise and make the most of every opportunity to help them.
The Bible tells me that God has created me in Christ Jesus to do good works, which He prepared in advance for me to do (Ephesians 2:10). Likewise, I should use whatever gift I have received to serve others as a faithful steward of God’s grace in its various forms (1 Peter 4:10). God has given me gifts, skills, and talents so that I may be able to help others wisely! Jesus Christ was undoubtedly wise in His actions and deeds while seeking to take care of His lambs and sheep!
Colossians 4:6 informs me my conversations should always be full of grace and helpful for others! While meditating upon this verse, I know many other biblical passages encourage my conversations to be full of grace and helpful for others which should build them up (Ephesians 4:29, 1 Thessalonians 5:11). What we have to say should build others up and be helpful! After all, “Gracious words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones” (Proverbs 16:24/NIV). Amen!
