His Eye Is On The Sparrow!

“Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?”

Matthew 6:26/NIV

Civilla Martin wrote the song “His Eye Is on the Sparrow” in 1904. The lyrics inform us, “when Jesus is my portion, a constant friend is He, His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches over me!” This song tends to prompt reflection about our personal life, perhaps with a perspective of our potentially fragile nature. For those who know Jesus Christ, this song reminds us that He is our sustainer and friend! As we know Jesus as our Lord and Savior, He is watching over us! How comforting!

My 97-year-old mother remains in her home with a team of caring souls who care for her around the clock. Much of her waking hours during the day are spent watching birds flocking to the bird feeders on her front porch. That grabs her attention with much fascination and delight to observe the energetic birds swarm and gather. That makes mom happy, knowing God’s creations are being cared for daily. If the food supply in the feeders is depleted, mom takes notice!

Many times when she is being cared for, she will notify us in an alarming fashion that the bird feeders are empty and the birds are starving! On one occasion, I encouraged one of the team members to remind mom of Matthew 6:26 and that God is watching over the birds and not letting them go hungry. When mom heard this, she responded: “yes, He is watching over them through me!” Interesting perspective! As God is watching over the sparrows, perhaps mom is too!

God takes care of His creations through many different means, and I believe He equips humanity to deliver what is needed. Regarding the birds, I know there is natural vegetation and food supplies for them. However, God can also provide for them through human efforts. The same concept applies to human needs!

  • “It is the Lord who goes before you. He will be with you; He will not leave you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed” (Deuteronomy 31:8/ESV).
  • “I lift up my eyes to the mountains—where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth” (Psalm 121:1-2/NIV).
  • “But my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:19/KJV).

As His eye is on the sparrows, I know He is also watching over us! Amen!

Many blessings to you!
