It was the second day of Holy Week, and our church sanctuary was open for anyone to come, sit, pray, meditate, and learn about the true meaning of Easter and the reason why we reflect upon and celebrate that glorious day of many centuries ago. For a time, was just me, sitting alone in the sanctuary. The gentle sound of soft music fills the air as two candles softly flicker in front of the alter. No words come to mind that could express the feeling of being in God’s house of worship, His house of prayer when it’s just you and Him with absolutely no distractions.
As I sat there in quiet solitude, I thought about the people who once filled these pews throughout this church’s history. I thought about all the souls who came to know and draw closer in their walk with the Lord. People who have since been called home to eternal life, the saints who heard these beautiful words from their Savior and Lord, “Well done good and faithful servant. Enter into the joy of your Lord.” Then I found my heart turning to the souls who walked the halls of this church, took part in various Bible studies, listened to sermon after sermon, week after week, and had multiple opportunities to reconcile with God but never did. Sadly, their self-chosen fate is to spend eternity not in heaven but in hell.
Of course, only the Lord knows a person’s heart, but Scripture tells us that broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many people are traveling it, but narrow is the path that leads to eternal life, and few people will follow it. Before Jesus performed His redeeming work on the cross at Calvary those many centuries ago, humanity’s only option was the broad road, the express lane to the gates of hell. Jesus made it possible for us to choose a better path, a righteous path, the path of reconciliation with God that will lead us to heaven’s gate.
The question is, what path are you walking? If you find yourself on the broad road, it’s not too late to take the off-ramp and redirect your course on the narrow path of which Jesus spoke. Jesus told Nicodemus that we must be born again to walk the narrow path and enter through heaven’s gate. What must I do? You ask. Believe that Jesus is the Son of God and that He died on the cross for your sins, and rose again on the third day. Confess your sins to God, seek His forgiveness, and He will forgive you and cover you with the righteousness of Christ. The Holy Spirit will come upon you and lead you as you begin your journey on the narrow path.
Best of all, if you commit your life to Jesus, the Bible says that you are a new creation, sealed for the day of redemption with your name written in the Lamb’s book of life. I urge you not to put off today what may not be an option tomorrow. No one is guaranteed tomorrow, but the Bible says that “today is the day of salvation!” Your time is now, this very minute, and no matter where you are or what time it is, God is waiting for you to accept His gift of eternal life.
If you choose to follow Jesus and steer the course, keep your eyes on and follow Him, and you will one day enter heaven’s gate and hear Jesus say, “Well done, good and faithful servant. Enter into the joy of your Lord.”
