“For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit.”

One of the famous slogans in the global workforce is: “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know.” Based on that mindset, people set out day after day to earn others’ approval. Whether it is to impress the boss, a colleague, or whomever, people can become driven by the need to please and be approved of by others to feel good about themselves. However, most often such efforts end in disappointment and the feeling of rejection. What a terrible way of life to have such stress looming in one’s heart day after day, but the Bible shows us that there is a better way.
The world is magnetic in that it continually draws people to seek the wrong things, whether that comes in the form of lustfulness, materialism, or whatever. It can quickly set people on a path to pursue that which will never satisfy and, for many, lead to destruction. Why? Because such empty pursuits often, if not always, leave God out of the picture. That was Apostle Paul’s point: “Those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh.”
Paul also said, “Those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit.” In other words, when we live according to God’s word and seek His righteousness and center our thoughts and actions on what pleases Him, we will be satisfied. How do we know that to be true? Jesus, during His sermon on the mount, gave us one of many beautiful promises. He said, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied” (Matt 5:6).
Therefore, as we set out each day to engage the world around us, let us seek first God’s kingdom and His righteousness in all things. When we do so, we had best be prepared to stand in awe by what He does both in and through us to make us whole and satisfied.
