Your Rod and Your Staff, They Comfort Me

At this time, the world is struggling with a pandemic of significant magnitude. If you were to go back in time before this devastating event, few people would have imagined that something this terrible could occur. Though medical experts worldwide have known and predicted something of this nature could happen, I am certain with the sudden onset of COVID-19, they too were a bit surprised.

For spiritually minded people, devastating events such as the one we now face tends to draw people closer to their spiritual practices and beliefs. Christians may draw from many Biblical references to help them begin to understand why something terrible like this pandemic could occur. Likewise, and more importantly, Christians can find many comforting and supportive Biblical passages to help them cope with this terrible moment and reframe their way of thinking to a mindset where there is hope.

Psalm chapter 23, believed to have been written by King David, is a well-known Biblical passage that many find great comfort and support. Psalm 23:4 says this: “even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff they comfort me.” Truly, it could be said that we worldwide are walking through the “darkest valley,” but as this Bible verse says, we should “fear no evil” for God is with us and will comfort us. Psalm 23:5 says: “you prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies, you anoint my head with oil, my cup overflows.”

That encourages me as we proceed through this devastating time where an “enemy” in the form of a virus is present, God will take care of my needs. Psalm 23:6 is also of great encouragement for me: “Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” As I, a Christian, proceed through this troubling time of uncertainty and demise for many people, I am comforted in knowing that the “Lord” will be with me, and I will dwell in His house forever.

I wish you many blessings, and I hope you find this message helpful and encouraging.
