“Preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; correct, rebuke, and exhort, with great patience and instruction.”2

When we face an emergency, such as a fire, robbery, or medical crisis, who do we call? We call the police, fire department, or rescue squad depending on the emergency, but why? Because they routinely undergo intense training to shape their minds on how to assess a situation, know how to respond, and what to do to save lives, and they do so day in and day out. Imagine the outcome if these first responders chose not to routinely train and to stay caught up on the latest threats or techniques that prepare them to do their job and save lives. Many would physically perish.
When people face a spiritual emergency, such as an unexpected death of a loved one, devastating news from their physician, or a crisis of national proportions like 9/11, who do they call? They call their Christian friends. Why? Because they assume their Christian friend will know how to assess the situation, how they should respond, and what to do. Imagine the outcome if Christians chose not to study and know the word of God, to be able to point people to those verses that would provide some answers, to learn about and enter into a relationship with Jesus. Many will spiritually perish in what the Bible terms the second death.
Many Christians do not just make it a daily routine to study their Bible; they crave and thirst for it. Jesus said in Matthew 5:6, “Blessed are those who thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied.” Still, there are other Christians who only pick up their Bibles once a week to carry it to church, and perhaps, they will at least open it to the focal passage of the preacher’s sermon. In his letter to Timothy, Apostle Paul instructs him to “preach the word; be ready in season and out of season,” and we, too, must be ready to share God’s at any moment.
Moreover, Scripture is God’s revelation of Himself to us all. To make Himself known so that we can know Him. He speaks to us through His inspired word on so many levels. The Bible gives us our knowledge to repel the temptations to sin, just as Jesus used Scripture to deflect Satan’s series of temptations. If you are not in God’s word daily, you miss out on something the word “special” cannot begin to describe. Plus, your friends will miss out because you are not there to share the love and word of God. Therefore, be encouraged to engage God’s word daily and develop a thirst and hunger that keeps you coming back for more.
