Is There Joy with a Plumbing Problem?

“Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds”

James 1:2/NIV

There was a time when I lived in a house with a septic tank. My previous houses had city municipal sewage, so a septic tank was something new. Out of sight and mind until the day comes when the commodes aren’t emptying. There was a Saturday around lunchtime when drainage came to a halt. As I quickly researched local septic support professionals, there were plenty in the area – no worries, I initially thought! After calling a dozen companies, with no answer from a living soul, I left messages with each. Hmmm, smelly day, I’m thinking! Prayers were lifted!

Despair not! Finally, one of the companies called me back and said the soonest they could help would be two days. Hearing the desperation in my voice, the kind lady said, “I know someone that has his own company, and I trust him and highly recommend him.” Great news! She gave me the phone number, and I called and left a message with this trusted soul. Quickly he called me back and asked about my problem and where I lived. When I told him my address, he responded: “I am not far from you, and I’ll be there in a few minutes.” Halleluiah! Answered prayer!

As this professional quickly arrived and determined the problem, he went to work, and the pipes were flowing again! Initially, my day quickly plunged into the abyss of a faulty septic system! While I desperately searched for someone who could assist, a multitude of prayers was being offered up! That was definitely a faith-building moment! The Apostle James advises me I should be joyful during difficulties of various nature, including septic problems (James 1:2). When our faith is tested, firmness in belief and determination (steadfastness) will occur (James 1:3). This prepares and strengthens us for the next troubling time!

As I lifted prayers of concern to God, I believe it was no accident that the person who came to assist was a Christ-follower! I am thankful he had a servant’s heart just like Jesus Christ and the fruit of the Spirit qualities (Galatians 5:22-23). That was truly a James 1:3 moment (testing and strengthening of faith, belief, and determination). As the crafty and resourceful professional was leaving our home with the problem solved, thanks and praise were offered up to God! Truly a happy ending to a smelly story!

Self-reflection consideration: When I am in a challenging moment, will my faith strengthen me, and can I seek God’s help confidently?

Many blessings to you!
