“And He who sits on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” And He *said, “Write, for these words are faithful and true.”Revelation 21:5
The feeling of newness is something everyone has experienced and is familiar to some degree or another. Whether it is going to a new school, getting a new toy as a child– or as an adult, and buying a new home, people enjoy the sensation of newness, like the smell of a new car. However, as time goes by and the novelty wears off, our feelings towards those things dwindle, and we tend not to take care of them as we once did. Even our approach to relationships can sometimes follow that same pattern, but a day is coming when God will make all things new and free from decay, wear and tear, a time when the newness of life itself will never fade.
What captures my eye in this verse is that God said, “Behold, I am making all things new,” not “Behold, I am making all new things.” That truly speaks to the fact that God is in the restoration business. An example would be how a person restores an old antique car. The mechanic does not throw away the original car to build a new one. Instead, the mechanic reconstructs the car to its original mint condition. It is the same for creation in that God does not throw it away or, in other words, destroy it to establish a new creation but He will restore it to its original luster and perfection.
In the world today, it is all too easy to see the dread of war, the scars, and the pain that sin has brought upon the earth because of mankind. We turn on the television only to see the pain, suffering, death, and destruction of one nation inflicting the horrors on another. But today, I would like to encourage you to close your eyes, shut the world out and imagine with you mind’s eye the day when God makes all things new. That day when the earth returns to its original pre-fallen luster and glory, a day when God will dwell among His people forever.
Therefore, as followers of the risen Lord Jesus Christ, we can find peace knowing that there is coming a day when all the evil and horrors we see in the world today will be no more. Based on God’s authority, we can look forward with assurance and great anticipation to the day when God makes all things new, and we will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
