How Should I Walk?

“Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers.”Psalm 1:1/NIV

I have many amazing memories of my children when they were little and were learning to walk. It is interesting how I would have to mechanically think through teaching someone something in a “step-by-step” manner. Stand, balance, lean, move a leg along with the corresponding foot, place the foot down, lean again and move the other leg and foot, place the foot down– practice makes perfect! After repeated practice, the child hops to their feet and begins running, and they, too, are not thinking about the mechanics! They were well taught about how to walk!

The focal verse advises us to walk in a “blessed” fashion and “not walk in step with the wicked” or have the appearance of sinners or mockers. That is a great basic and sound teaching that is easy to understand. However, if old and cantankerous habits are in place, perhaps this sound teaching may be hard to do. As we learn to walk and are successful, this teaches us a habit and routine to follow. If we are not careful, we can develop lifestyles and routines that result in us walking (behaviors and routines) in a sinful and wicked manner. Where can we turn for guidance?

Psalm 1:2 tells us we should meditate on the Bible day and night, which will teach us what we need to know, leading to wisdom and insight. In the book of Joshua, God teaches him the same thing: “Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful” (Joshua 1:8/NIV). Reading God’s word and meditating on it day and night will influence proper ways of thinking and actions (“walk”), which should lead to blessings!

Throughout Psalm 1, further insight is gained about actions and mannerisms which reflect a “blessed” lifestyle. The person who lives in a manner and has a “walk” consistent with biblical teachings will be “like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither—whatever they do prospers” (Psalm 1:3/NIV). Psalm 1:6 also tells us that God will watch over those who have a “walk” consistent with what the Bible teaches as good. Keep the Bible on your lips and follow the teaching provided; in doing so, blessings, prosperity, and success will occur! Amen!

Many blessings to you!
