Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefitsPsalm 103:2
Not long ago, I had the opportunity to listen to a missionary speak about all of the great things that he had experienced in his life and in his mission work. He spoke about trips overseas and travels all across the country. He recounted stories of praying with individuals in devastating times and bringing the Gospel to the ends of the Earth. Throughout his testimony, he emphasized one very important truth; everything that he had experienced and done had been by the blessing of God.
It is our great joy to experience the blessing and the grace of our heavenly Father. However, the blessings that God brings into our lives may not always be fully evident to us. Too often, we can attribute to ourselves the work that God is doing in our lives. This isn’t necessarily a conscious act, but there is something deep within our fallen nature that fails to see the truth of how God is working in and around us.
Moses and Aaron learned this lesson the hard way. In Numbers 20, we find Moses and Aaron neglect the direction of God and strike the rock to bring forth water. Mistakenly thinking that they had a part in the work God had done, Moses says, “Shall we bring water for you out of this rock?” (Num. 20:10). In lifting up themselves, they diminished the work of God to something less than holy. As punishment, God denied them both the blessing of entering into the promised land that they had been waiting to enter for over 40 years.
Moses and Aaron knew God’s blessing, and they had experienced God’s blessings in the multiple ways. However, they forgot that God’s blessings don’t just manifest in parts of our lives and not others. They are present in every aspect of our lives. As we look to see how God has blessed us, we should remember that everything that we are and everything that we have is because of God. Our entire lives are a blessing from a great and merciful God. As we remember this, it will be easier to attribute praise where praise is due, and thank God for the incredible works that He accomplishes in each of our lives. As the songs sings;
Count your blessings, name them one by one, and it will surprise you what the Lord has done.
