1 When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly there came from heaven a noise like a violent rushing wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 And there appeared to them tongues as of fire distributing themselves, and they rested on each one of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit was giving them utterance.
Acts 2:1-4
On the Day of Pentecost, the Bible says the Holy Spirit’s arrival was sudden, unexpected, and came with the sound of a forceful wind, like hurricane-force winds that have a thunderous unmistakable howl. Now you might think to yourself, Wait a minute! I didn’t feel or hear any such wind when I became a believer.
On the Day of Pentecost, God made the supernatural process of receiving the Holy Spirit dramatic. The Bible says that a sound from heaven filled the whole house. But why so dramatic? Such a booming sound would have startled the locals and drawn a crowd of curious people wanting to see what was happening.
This dramatic scene also served as a confidence builder for the disciples; it gave them the stamina to stand before the same crowd who had crucified the Lord Jesus some 50 days before and preach the gospel. In their human weakness, they remained in hiding, fearing the authorities, but with the power and presence of the Holy Spirit, they found new strength to proclaim the gospel without fear or reservation.
God was setting the stage for a great harvest of souls; about three thousand people received Jesus Christ as their Savior and Lord that day following Peter’s spur-of-the-moment sermon. It was the first sermon of the New Testament church. The power of the Holy Spirit enabled every person present to hear the gospel in their native language, as He gave the disciples the words to say.
As a believer and follower of the risen Lord Jesus Christ, you, too, have the presence of the Holy Spirit in you. How will God set the stage for you in the day or days ahead to reach out and share the gospel with someone through the power of the Holy Spirit so that they, too, might believe and enter into a relationship with Jesus? Are you ready to answer God’s call, saying, “Here I am Lord, send me!”
