There are times in life when things are going our way, we have a spring in our step, and our confidence level is off the scale. Simply put, life is firing on all cylinders for us, and we see ourselves standing on top of the world. However, Apostle Paul conveys that when we build our egos to such heights, our focus is not on God but on ourselves. It reminds me of what Jesus once said, being those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.
It’s at that time when we are most vulnerable to temptation, a time when we think we have it all under control. For example, people say, “Oh! I can quit drinking, smoking, cheating, or looking at porn, or abusing medications at any time I choose– Hey, I got this, man!” However, as time moves forward, their ability to stop becomes increasingly difficult. Sin works in this way in that the more a person commits the same sin over and over, the more difficult it is for that person to stop and turn from that sin.
That is the thrust of Paul’s message where if you think you’re invincible and there is no way you will ever fall, which is to say fall into temptation, step cautiously; you are likely closer to a fall than you realize. The words of Apostle Paul to the Philippian church provide us with the proper mindset to guard ourselves against this all too easy pitfall. Paul said, “Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility consider one another as more important than yourselves.”
