“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.“

Matthew 5:6

Picture the scene of John the Baptist standing on the shoreline of the Jordan River, going about his daily ministry routine, and Jesus walks by a few yards away. John, in awe, says to two of his disciples, Behold, the Lamb of God.” The two men with John wasted no time and pursued Jesus hurriedly to catch up with Him.

One of the two men was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother; the other is believed to be the apostle John. What is interesting is how that all transpired. There are three points that we should take notice of here. Andrew had a genuine thirst for righteousness, was alert and attentive, and took action.

Andrew stood where he could hear John the Baptist preach and proclaim the Messiah. He thirsted for righteousness, made himself available to hear God’s word, and fed his appetite to know and draw closer to God. He did so with purpose and intent.

We learn from Andrew that we must also make a concerted effort to position ourselves to hear or read God’s word. We, too, must have an unyielding thirst for righteousness; otherwise, we will waiver in our faith and make ourselves more vulnerable to temptation without seeking first God’s kingdom and spending time with God.

If we are not careful, our thirst, our hunger can wean over time to where our appetite shifts to the things of the world, which, in turn, are unsatisfying and only cause us to hunger for more. However, Jesus tells us that blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness; He promises us that we will be satisfied.

Therefore, let us begin this day and every day that follows with a mindset to always seek God’s kingdom, wisdom, and righteousness above all things. When we do, we will be amazed at how life begins to fall into place according to God’s perfect plan.
