Your Work Matters to God

In the world, you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”

John 16:33

In the world in which we live, people tend to judge others based on their status in the community, where a person is in an organization, the clothes she wears, or the car he drives, and the list goes on and on, seemingly without end. Suppose a person with a doctorate and a master’s degree is seen washing dishes at a restaurant. The world views such a person as having a low intelligence quotient or IQ. They tend to view that person as someone of little or no value to society, yet they see themselves as highly valued assets.

Thank God that in His kingdom, everyone is valued equally and is an important part of the greater whole of His holy work. In God’s kingdom, it’s not all about the individual but about God. No job in heaven is considered to have little value, mundane, or meaningless. The saints who perform those tasks are seen as neither great nor small, wise or unwise, intelligent or unintelligent, but instead, they are seen as good and faithful servants. It is the same for the work God appoints for us to do in this life, and while it may go unnoticed by man, nothing escapes God’s watchful eye.

So when the world starts to drag you down, treat you as inferior to itself, and devalue your intellect, remember that you are created in the image of your Creator — the image of God. You are unique to God, and He values you greatly. He values and loves you so much that He paid the ultimate price so you may one day walk with Him on the streets of gold in His kingdom. God began to change the world by spreading the gospel through the faithful service of men who were fishermen, tax collectors, and other tradesmen.

So as we begin a new day, knowing that God changed the world by working through ordinary people, let us ask ourselves, “What then can He accomplish through each of us and our faithful service?” Let us faithfully answer His call by saying, “Here I am, Lord, send me!”
