Divine Appointments

“Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.”

~ Galatians 6:2/NIV

There was an occasion following my volunteer chaplain shift at a local hospital when I returned to turn in my pager. Even though I was no longer “on-call,” there were still opportunities around me to serve and assist. Heading into the hospital, a person was walking hunched over, limping, and in visible pain. Going over to assist him; he needed a wheelchair and help with getting to his clinic for medical assistance, which was provided. I introduced myself to him as Chaplain James, and he thanked me for my kindness and asked me to pray for him – so I did. He was very appreciative and thankful for the unexpected assistance and prayers in his time of need.

After turning in my pager, as I was leaving the hospital to head to work, there was an elderly lady at the front entrance who appeared very worried and distressed. I introduced myself to her and asked her how I could help, and she explained her daughter had been brought to the hospital in an ambulance and needed to be with her. I assisted her to the Emergency Room where her daughter was; this lady was extremely thankful for the guidance and support.

While leaving the hospital the second time, I stopped by the front desk at the entrance to talk to the volunteer greeter and the security guard. They both told me how long they’d served at the hospital and their various experiences. I thanked them for their hard work and efforts to help humanity. Though I did not give them a million dollars for their efforts, pausing to talk to them and express gratitude, put smiles on their faces. Sometimes, we can only provide a helping hand, words of thanks and encouragement, guidance, a shoulder to cry on, and prayer. Were these encounters with humanity an accident? The older I become, I don’t think so!

The concept of “divine appointments” is considered a meeting with another person(s) God has specifically and unmistakably arranged.  As my goal for the moment was to turn in my pager and head on to work, I believe God had other work He needed me to do. Helping the crippled man and the distressed elderly lady and talking to and thanking the security guard and volunteer greeter were unplanned encounters. I believe these were Divine appointments that God arranged for a momentary purpose for people with needs who would benefit from encouragement and support. Proverbs 3:27 tells us to “not withhold good from those to whom it is due when it is in your power to act.” Though I did not give anyone a million dollars, I hope the support was worth more!

Important consideration: Be on the lookout for Divine appointments! You never know what a difference you will make, but God does!

Many blessings to you!
